Player Eligibility

Please read below to determine which division to register your child in for either Flag or Tackle Football, plus other helpful information.

Quick facts:

Who can play SFL?  Great News:  There are no geographical restrictions!  All we need is your firm commitment to attending 2 practices* and 1 game a week.

*Flag Division, per the coach's discretion, will likely reduce to one practice per week as the season progresses.

Divisions are formed by age (not grade) with the exception of Seniors.

Freshmen Division (Flag): (Born between August 1, 2012 and July 31, 2014) We may accept some younger kids based on availability. Please contact the Freshmen Division Director at freshmen@sfltx.org for age waiver information.

Sophomore Division Flag or Tackle:
(Born between August 1, 2010 and July 31, 2012)

Junior Division 7 on 7 or Tackle:
(Born between August 1, 2008 and July 31, 2010)

Senior Division Tackle, The Shamrocks:
7th and 8th graders

IMPORTANT FLAG FOOTBALL NOTE: PARENTS HAVE THE OPTION TO EITHER REGISTER THEIR CHILD INDIVIDUALLY OR A COACH/TEAM MANAGER CAN CHOOSE TO REGISTER AN ENTIRE TEAM OF SIX PLAYERS (3 MORE PLAYERS WILL BE ADDED TO A PRE-ASSEMBLED TEAM BY THE DIVISION DIRECTOR).  BE SURE TO SELECT INDIVIDUAL FLAG REGISTRATION OR TEAM REGISTRATION.  IF YOU DON'T HAVE A SIX PLAYER TEAM ASSEMBLED YET BUT YOU WANT TO GROUP A FEW KIDS TOGETHER, PLEASE REGISTER AS AN INDIVIDUAL AND MAKE A SPECIAL REQUEST TO BE ON THAT CHILD'S TEAM.

Playing up or Playing Down in a higher or lower division:  Any Parent that wishes to have their child play up or down a division is welcome to make that request by asking the President directly. A smaller but older child might request to play down, a larger/very physical child might want to play up. The league always reserves the right to move any child in the interest of safety. For Freshman and Sophomore divisions, exceptions to the rule are likely to be infrequent. At the Junior level we are more likely to approve requests to play down because the Senior Division is grade-based.

In the Sophomore and Junior divisions, boys whose weight and/or experience is decidedly outside the norm may potentially be moved within divisions at the sole discretion of the League. The SFL is committed to a safe, fair and fun experience for all our players.

NOTE: Weight Limits for Tackle Divisions have been REVISED for the 2020 season
